About Me

Hello!

My name is Lexi Scott, I’m a Cal Poly student studying journalism. I’m writing this blog for a multimedia reporting class and I hope it will motivate you to start running, and if you already run, learn new things about running in San Luis Obispo. I have recently started running and I love what it does to my body and my mind. I am hoping to have fun expanding my knowledge of running while providing you with helpful tips through interactive reporting. I will be blogging about gyms, running trails, and correct running form.

I am currently retired from running at 71 but for about 10 years I ran for conditioning and in an occasional 10K or marathon race. At most of my runs, when other runners were present, almost always I watched as they stretched prior to starting their run. Many concentrated on stretching their Achilles tendons and legs. I almost never stretched before a run, be it in a race or in a workout. In my whole time running I can’t recall getting any leg cramps or leg injuries. Some years I averaged 100 miles per week with an occasional Saturday 15-20 mile run. My question to you and your readers is: What scientific evidence is available to support the idea that various pre run stretching exercises are necessary and useful to reduce injuries or improve running performance. I know that many trainers are adamant that this is a must but is it really scientifically proven. Sometimes at races it almost seemed like a sort of primping before the run with many doing it because everyone else was doing it.
All that aside, there is no better feeling I have ever experienced than hitting the 3 mile point in my early morning 10 mile run when the sun was just coming up and my body was humming like a well oiled machine. What a feeling of power, serenity and love of life it was. I hope many others can enjoy that feeling as well.
